How to Rank on the First Page of Google

How to Rank on Google First Page

Ranking a website on the first page of Google is a very challenging task. If somebody asks you to rank a website on Google's first page for free or without spending a penny then it might seem to be an impossible task.

But is it so? Not really, still, it is a challenging task. If you follow some of the strategies then Google's first page is guaranteed for your web page.

This article is all about moving your website to the search engine results page (SERP) and particularly pushing it from that second, third, or tenth page and helping to get your web page to the top of Google.

Your website and content need to meet a particular level of quality, like your site should be mobile-friendly, decently fast loading, with clear navigation, secured using HTTPS, free from other technical SEO issues. You should have well-written content.

The method which is to be shared here will produce better results even if your website is up to scratch and also solve your query of ‘How to get a website on the google first page '

Some of these are direct Google ranking factors. It is considered that you are having existing web pages with targeted keywords and you have done the proper keyword research.

So next time if someone asks you how to get your business to show up on Google's first page? Tell him to follow these strategies.

Rank website on Google first page

Stage 1

You should check the level of competition. That gives an idea about who you are competing with. Since your aim is how to get my website higher on Google i.e. to rank on the first page of Google

Your competitors are those who are ranking in primary 8-10 positions on Google.

In this stage, you have to check for the initial keyword to determine if the websites ranking for this keyword are in your scope. You have a blog on a specific niche like health and you are interested in a topic whose keywords are related to health.

You pick up something like ‘Weight Loss’ from Google search recommendations while typing.

You find that the top pages are well-known brands or health magazines like 'Healthline', 'Wikipedia', 'MedicineNet', 'WebMD', and 'Eatthis'. It looks very challenging, you probably won't be able to rank anytime soon up with these pages.

Also, my SEOquake extension in the Chrome browser shows me the keyword difficulty for this as 92.80% which is very high.

  • SEOquake extension - A free plugin that provides key SEO metrics, also this is the product of SEMrush which is one of the better keyword research tools.

So you start looking for something like ‘Weight loss diet plan’, but it shows well-known sites from 'Healthline', 'HealthifyMe', etc. with a keyword difficulty of 81.38%, which is still pretty high.

Then you look for ‘7-day diet plan Indian’, here too it shows results from pages of 'HealthifyMe', 'Indianbodybuilding', 'Healthline', etc. with keyword difficulty of 76.26% which is somewhat decreased but still quite high.

Reduced Keyword Difficulty Score Using SEOquake

If you search for something like ‘healthy diet chart for Indian family’ which shows a keyword difficulty of a mere 29.54% which is possible to overcome as keyword difficulty below 40% is always preferable and some of the pages ranking for these are still quite competitive and big but you can try for this. So this might be more within your reach.

So it looks like this depends on a combination of types of ranked web pages and keyword difficulty.

Stage 2

The second thing to look at is 'Website Authority' which represents the overall strength of a website's backlink profile.

This is synonymous with the SEO concept of 'Domain Authority' (DA) from Moz. The best way to check this is by using: ahref’s website authority checker

You have to check the authority of web pages ranking on the first page of Google for your desired keywords. If domain ratings of all of the websites are quite high compared to your page then you probably won't be able to compete.

So do find the keywords which are having low domain ratings and are near to your score of domain ratings then the chances are that your keyword is rankable.

You can also check backlinks referring to your website using aherfs backlink checker. These features are free and they are useful to identify and check the relative "strength" of a brand from an SEO perspective.

You can also use another free feature called ‘Keyword generator’ by ahrefs.

If you search for a ‘seven-day diet plan for weight loss' using this you can see here that it shows data with keyword difficulty(KD), search volume with an updated duration for different small keywords in your keyword search term.

You have to check rankings by KD.So you can skip the keywords with high KD and go for keywords with low KD, probably below 50.

If you have chosen a keyword that is too competitive then go back to keyword research and find some less competitive keywords using keyword rank. Such types of tools could be useful for that.

So next time if someone asks you, 'How to get my website higher on Google’, share these tips with them.

Stage 3

Next is to make sure that your page is in accordance with search intent, meaning the foundation behind a search request.

For example, when you look for "how to lose weight" you would see that almost all of the top-ranked pages are ways and tips for losing weight or how-to-do guidelines with methods to lose weight.

Search intent could be identified by finding the keyword on Google. It is determined using,

1. Type of content – It is nothing but looking for the types of pages ranking for your searched keyword.

2. Arrangement of Content - This applies mainly to the ranking of informational content. Common formats include how-to guides, step-by-step procedures, list posts, opinions, reviews, and comparisons.

3. The direction of Content - This is generally the principal unique selling pattern used by the top-ranking pages.

For example, pages ranking for ' best weight loss pills ' are having the current year within the title which indicates that here freshness is of prime importance.

It is always better to match the searcher's query. This increases the chances of ranking.

Stage 4

Your content should cover the full topic. Google looks at the topic quite differently than us. For example, if we have to search for ‘best mobile brands’, you might say about Samsung or Xiaomi. If you ask more people, you would possibly get completely different answers.

If you observe  Google's top 10 pages for this query, it's certainly clear that you need to write a list-style blog post like the top 5, top 10, etc. which concentrates on some specific details like brand, features, and cost, etc.

Most of these web pages mention Apple iPhone XI or Samsung S20 which gives you some guidelines related to your webpage.

Stage 5

The next successive step to 'rank website on Google first page' is to evaluate the number of backlinks you need, then build them. Google has indicated that backlinks are a significant ranking factor.

It is been found that there is a positive relationship between organic search traffic and backlinks

But is there a way to know the particular number of backlinks required for this?

It depends on your topic and keywords, as all backlinks created are not equal. You can get a rough approximation using Ahrefs 'Keywords Explorer'

When you search for your required keyword, just below the ‘Keyword Difficulty score on the page, it tells the estimated no of backlinks needed to rank in the top 10 for the particular keyword, by taking an average of the number of unique websites linking to the highest pages.

You can analyze the other factors such as relevance and domains of the topics of the pages, website authority of the top 10 pages in the list.

Stage 6

The next step is to feature internal links to your page. We have already seen that backlinks can help to boost your page authority. Also, internal links can help immensely in this regard.

The pages that you link from your own previous pages should have some common linking connections like the same keywords. So you have to follow strategic linking for internal links. Just go through all your previous pages and add internal links where relevant.

Generally the more authority you have built to the linking pages, the more authority it can pass to the linked pages.

If you have done all these stages sequentially then up to this point, it's just a matter of waiting.

But how long?

It depends on different factors.

Research by Ahrefs has found out that after studying 2 million keywords, it was seen that less than 5% of the top 10 pages were under a year old.

This first page of google statistics shows that indeed there is a chance to get on google first page for free using these strategies. So do repeat the process for different keywords and pages.

But there is one very important thing to know that ranking on the primary page of Google might not be enough to solve your SEO problems.

Research says that there's a huge drop-off in CTR (click-through rate) after the first 2 or 3 positions.

It means that if you are ranking in position 10, you would only get around a tenth click-through rate. It is like if you ranked in position 10 for a keyword that gets searched 100 times per month, that's only 1 search visitor, which may not be worth all these efforts.

So rather than only going for a first-page ranking, try to be in the highest 3. This is possible with matching search intent, generating thorough content, and link building.

The possibility of ranking on Google's primary page is achievable if you follow all these steps.

These are simple yet effective strategies to rank the website on Google's first page.
